The Rummel Rebels gathered the weekend of May 17-18 to celebrate their 50th anniversary since graduation. Activities kicked off with golf at Johnny Goodman Golf Course on Friday followed by a Stag Night at Roncalli Catholic, and dinner at the German American Society on Saturday.
“Catching up with everyone on Friday night was the best,” says graduate John Thomsen. “Guys only, so everyone could do some serious reminiscing. Saturday night dinner and dance by Johnny O brought back memories and saw several alums’ shake a leg.’”
In 1964 Archbishop Rummel High School opened as an all-boys school operated by the De LaSalle Christian Brothers with only the freshman class. In 1974, Notre Dame and Rummel merged to form an Archdiocesan, coed high school – Roncalli High School, named after Pope John XXIII (Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli) eventually changing the name in 1993 to Roncalli Catholic High School.
The Class of 1969 enjoyed the company of Principal, TJ Orr, on Friday, and President, Ann O’Connor, on Saturday. Both presented information to the Rebels about program enhancements, facility improvements and student accomplishments in recent years.
For over five years, the class of 1969 has fundraised to provide a scholarship that benefits the young men and women of Roncalli Catholic. The Class of 1969 Legacy Scholarship is given to two individuals with a “Rebel Spirit,” someone who gives their all and is involved in the Roncalli Catholic community. The 2019 recipients of this year’s Legacy Scholarship were Isaac O’Neal, Class of 2021, and Ophelia Roth, Class of 2022. During their reunion weekend, the Class of 1969 raised over $11,000 for this scholarship.
“Thanks to the committee, the Rummel class of 1969s 50th Reunion was a great success. It was hard to believe that there were guys there whom we haven’t seen or talked to for 50 years,” said John Thomsen.
